The party set out for Arden Vul on the 1st of Dikaios. The weather was cool and clear. The party consisted of the following characters:
Chert, a dwarf
Brida Ericsdottir, a Wiskin cleric of Thor
Elennal Luthiendottir, a wood elf
Capdoffer, a goblin
Callius Frobenius, an Archontean magic-user
Deciding not to seek the service of retainers, the party set out along the road from Gosterwick. As they travelled the party discussed the various rumors they had heard about Arden Vul, many of which involved a goblin named Gog, an archon of Arden Vul named Marius Tricotor, the Temple of Set, and the cult of Thoth. Approaching the Long Falls the party decided to investigate the tower located near the base of the Long Stair. Brida and Elennal lit a torch and investigated the interior while the rest of the party searched outside. Discovering a trap door (from which Brida felt a sense of foreboding) they called the rest of the party in. After a few failed attempts by other party members, and ignoring ominous whispers coming from beneath, Brida was able to open the stuck trap door whereupon the ghost that had been whispering and causing discomfort sprang into view. Everyone except Brida (who was safe behind the trap door) failed their save and fled, having aged ten years in but a second. Finding the powerful spirit unaffected by her attempts to turn it, Brida fled as well, and the party, older and wiser, turned their attention to the Long Stair.
During their ascent of the Long Stair, they investigated two openings along the way. The first contained nothing but a fire pit and a supply of firewood. Clearing out the spiderwebs that choked the second opening they discovered the remains of a dwarf. Callius cast a Detect Magic ritual and discovered that the powder inside an old potion bottle and the dwarf’s boots were magical. Placing the boots upon his feet Callius was unable to remove them but was not much troubled by this as they were the most comfortable boots he had ever worn. Chert respectfully bundled up the remains of the dwarf and placed them in his pack.
Attaining the top of the cliff the party entered the city of Arden Vul. In the hopes of finding unexplored areas hopefully containing loot, they eschewed the boulevard leading north towards the middle of the city and headed west towards the Swift River and the marshy area in the southwest quadrant of the city. Luck was with them as they explored, and they found a five pound package of preserved meat and Elennal discovered a six inch tall ebony statuette of a seated cat with a gold earring. Their luck continued as they explored a mostly intact L-shaped building just east of the marsh, finding a hidden basement which was empty but afforded good shelter and a polished femur inscribed in Mythric: “Upon application of the hot iron Sicandros the barbarian revealed the location of the tomb of Muirasso the archon … beside the bridge leading to the lower levels”. Again casting a ritual of Detect Magic Callius was able to ascertain that Elennal’s cat statue was magical. Various investigations were made that evening to try and discover the nature of the magic but were unsuccessful.
The morning of the 2nd dawned bright and cool, with a strong wind blowing. Finding their supplies somewhat low and not wishing to return to Gostwerwick with little to show for their efforts the party spent the day hunting along the margin of the swamp. With Elennal’s skills the party was able to replenish their supply of food (giant rat, delicious). Finding enough to eat that day and enough for the next day as well, the party made plans to spend the 3rd exploring more of the city. The session ended as the party woke that morning to find a fog had developed overnight, muffling sound, reducing visibility, and making the deserted city even more foreboding.
My Cap Doffer also got aged by that tower ghost, in the campaign before I rebooted him for solo play, below.
